What is TRE®

What is TRE®?

TRE® stands for Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises. It is a somatic body based tool that encourages muscle tremors for a non-talk type of therapy. It can be used for individuals suffering from chronic tension, stress, anxiety, trauma, or PTSD.

Created by Dr. David Berceli, TRE® is comprised of exercises and stretches that help in moving the body into a state where it can more easily release stress, tension, and trauma. In all of his work as a trauma therapist, a somatic body worker, and a doctor of clinical social work, Dr. Berceli found we all share common reactions in high stress and traumatic situations: we all curl up on ourselves for protection. A natural survival instinct.

He theorized that if there is a mechanism in our bodies that wants to protect us, then there must also be a mechanism that lets our bodies release that tension held deeply in our muscles. This opens space in the body to heal from physical/emotional injury, discharges stress/trauma, and gives the body the opportunity to find rest.

"Although there is a lot of anecdotal evidence regarding TRE®, and many pilot clinical outcome studies are in progress and have verified its efficacy around the globe, larger controlled quantitative and qualitative studies are needed.
